A large group of residents from Ondo State gathered today at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, voicing their concerns over the upcoming governorship election. The demonstrators are calling for the immediate removal of the state’s Electoral Commissioner, citing alleged bias and misconduct that they believe undermines the integrity of the electoral process.
The protest, organized by various civil society groups and local stakeholders, featured speeches from community leaders who expressed their fears regarding the fairness of the electoral commission under the current commissioner. They highlighted previous instances of alleged malpractice and lack of transparency that have contributed to a growing distrust in the electoral system.
"We are here to demand accountability and to ensure that our voices are heard," said one of the protest leaders. "We cannot allow our democratic process to be compromised. The people of Ondo deserve free and fair elections."
The protest comes in the wake of heightened political tensions in the state as the governorship election approaches. Demonstrators called for INEC to act swiftly in addressing their concerns to foster a credible electoral environment.
INEC officials met with protest representatives to discuss their grievances and pledged to review the situation. However, residents remain vigilant, emphasizing the need for continued pressure to ensure their demands are met.
