In a devastating incident on October 1, over 150 passengers are feared missing after a boat capsized in the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. The boat, carrying more than 300 passengers, predominantly women and children, was en route to a Maulid celebration when it overturned.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing, with approximately 150 passengers rescued so far.
The Director-General of NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, expressed deep concern over the incident and assured the public that all available resources are being deployed to aid in the rescue efforts. “Our priority is to find and rescue the missing passengers.
The Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, has directed immediate support and relief measures for the affected families. He has also called for an investigation into the cause of the accident to prevent future occurrences.
