Honorable Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, has publicly apologized for his recent conduct involving the assault of a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. The incident, which occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja, has sparked widespread condemnation and is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement released today, Ikwechegh expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating, "I am deeply sorry for my actions and the distress I have caused. I acknowledge that my behavior was unacceptable and does not reflect the values I strive to uphold as a public servant." He further emphasized the need for personal reflection and professional help, admitting that he requires counseling to address his behavior.
The altercation was captured in a viral video that has drawn significant public attention. Reports indicate that the lawmaker slapped the driver multiple times and made threats that raised serious concerns about abuse of power.
The Nigeria Police Force has initiated an investigation into the incident following an official complaint from Mr. Abuwatseya. The police have urged members of the public to refrain from using their positions to intimidate others and have committed to conducting a thorough and impartial inquiry into the matter.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Ikwechegh's political party, has also condemned his actions as "totally unacceptable" and contrary to the party's principles of respect for human rights. The party has announced plans to establish a disciplinary committee to investigate the incident further.
