The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken decisive action to safeguard public health by deregistering and banning the popular Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap. This urgent measure follows the discovery of a harmful chemical impurity, Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), in the product.
The presence of Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), a chemical impurity that poses significant health risks was the major reason why NAFDAC banned the product for the consumption of Nigerians.
According to NAFDAC, "BMHCA is a prohibited substance in cosmetic products due to its potential to harm the reproductive system, cause harm to unborn children, and induce skin sensitization."
NAFDAC urges all consumers to discontinue the use of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap immediately. Retailers and distributors are also advised to remove the product from their shelves and cease its sale.
"Importation of soaps is prohibited in Nigeria as per the restricted and import prohibition list. Beyond the import restrictions soaps and cosmetics are parts of the items ineligible for foreign exchange to import in Nigeria.
"These products are also not available in the NAFDAC database. Importers, distributors, retailers and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale and use of the products. Members of the public in possession of the product should discontinue the sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
"Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report adverse events experienced with the use of regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office, via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, E-reporting platforms available at NAFDAC website
